Newport craftsmen made the city into a vibrant center of furniture design and production in the 18th century. Generations of artisans were part of Newport's general artistic flowering in the Colonial Era, when the city was among the leading commercial and artistic cities in British North America. Their creations in the finest woods have become legendary in the history of American decorative arts. The important collections of Newport furniture in the Nichols-Wanton-Hunter House have been included in the Rhode Island Furniture Archive at the Yale University Art Gallery, a web-based resource on furniture and furniture making in Rhode Island from the time of the first European colonization in 1636 through the early 19th century. Join leading scholars of American furniture as they examine Rhode Island's remarkable heritage in furniture production and trade.
